After barely ten minutes, a scenario presented several times this season began to replay. For the umpteenth time. It’s a script we’ve seen so many times this season, it’s boring and predictable: CF Montreal was thrown out of reach on the road straight away.

Oh this plot? Or perhaps the one concerning the club’s offensive breakdown, cleared in its last three outings? Regardless, the outcome was known from the start and this time it was the Chicago Fire who had the pleasure of beating the Montrealers 3-0 on Wednesday night at Soldier Field.

And yet CF Montreal had a golden chance to score from a penalty. But when nothing goes, nothing goes. Ariel Lassiter sent his shot directly to the post and CF Montreal was never able to generate any stress among the locals.

If everything was necessary for Montreal to extricate itself from the bottom of the MLS rankings to revive its season, it did not need to do much to collapse just as quickly.
