A new digital revolution is underway. On the occasion of the Interministerial Committee for Road Safety (CISR), this Monday, July 17, 2023, Gérald Darmanin announced the “total dematerialization” of the driving license from 2024, as reported by BFMTV. Concretely, during a roadside check, it will now be possible to present the digital version of this document using your smartphone.

“Alongside this physical permit, there will be a dematerialized permit, which you can have on your smartphone, whatever your smartphone is, to be able to present it to the police and to see the number of points it has remains”, thus specified the Minister of the Interior. This announcement was made at the same time as that of the abolition of the green car insurance sticker from April 1, 2024.

In order to use this permit, at the time of technological revolutions, it will be necessary to have the France Identity digital application. Even if the latter is still in the experimental phase, it will allow you to import a digital version of your identity card on your mobile. To do this, it will be essential to have a biometric identity card, available for two years in France.

This announcement follows that of the European Commission which planned a dematerialized driving license project, in order to make the tool usable by all countries of the European Union.

Moreover, these digital novelties have precedents. The identity card and driving license replace the dematerialized Carte Vitale. Indeed, since January 1, 2023, it has been deployed throughout the country until 2026, thanks to a dedicated application.
