Portuguese director Tiago Rodrigues, who is also the current president of the Avignon Festival, will be visiting Montreal next spring as part of the TransAmériques Festival.

For the occasion, he will present his play Catarina and the beauty of killing fascists. Only three performances are planned at the Théâtre Duceppe, from May 26 to 28.

The FTA made the announcement on Monday noon, thus unveiling the first major show in its upcoming programming for 2024.

This political fable features a family that has continued a bloody tradition for 70 years: that of killing a fascist every year to honor the memory of Catarina Eufémia, a farm worker brutally murdered under the Salazar dictatorship. However, the youngest, who is to be initiated that day, hesitates to shoot the man kidnapped for the occasion. What if killing was not a courageous act of resistance as revolutionary songs trumpet, but rather a simple crime?

Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists will mark Tiago Rodrigues’ third visit to the FTA, after By Heart, presented in 2015, and Antony and Cleopatra, visiting in 2017.

The play will be presented in Portuguese with surtitles in French and English. Tickets are on sale now.
