(Toronto) Denver Nuggets star player Jamal Murray will not play for Canada at the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Basketball Canada announced the news on Wednesday.

Murray, who did not attend Canada’s training camp in Toronto earlier in August, said after consulting with his team and medical staff, he made the decision that he needed time to additional recovery after a long season.

Two months ago, Murray helped the Denver Nuggets win their first NBA title in franchise history.

The Ontarian did not play in the 2021-22 season as he recovered from surgery to heal a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The FIBA World Cup will take place from August 25 to September 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. To secure its place at the Paris Olympics in 2024, Canada must finish in the top-2 of the Americas teams.

Canada is in Spain this week to play friendlies against the Spaniards on Thursday and the Dominicans on Friday.
