(Berlin) Boris Becker is the new coach of young Danish player Holger Rune, announced the German, former world No.1 and six-time Grand Slam winner, Thursday on the Eurosport channel.

“I’m Holger Rune’s coach,” “Boom Boom” Becker, 55, told Eurosport, who described his new foal as “a diamond in the rough that needs to be polished.”

“We had been in contact for a long time […]. I’m flattered that he chose me,” said Becker, who has been providing his expertise as a TV consultant since his release from prison last December.

“I like this kind of player with a strong temperament,” underlined Boris Becker, who was the coach of the current world No.1 Novak Djokovic from 2013 to 2016, and who has not coached for six years.

Six years, part of which spent behind bars: in 2023 in Great Britain he served eight months of a 30-month prison sentence for contravening bankruptcy rules by concealing assets of the order of 3, $1 million to avoid having to pay his debts, before being extradited to Germany in December.

“He is one of the best young talents in world tennis, I will strive to find the best in him,” added the three-time Wimbledon winner.

Rune, 20, former junior world No.1, reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2023, and rose to 4th place in the world in August, the best ATP ranking ever achieved by a Dane .

But very disappointing results recently – four eliminations upon entry into contention in four of his last five tournaments, including the United States Open – have caused him to slip today to sixth in the world.
