(Seville) France was eliminated in the group stage of the Billie Jean King Cup, with Italy’s victory against Germany on Thursday.

The Italian Martina Trevisan (43rd in the world) first beat the German Eva Lys (130th), then Jasmine Paolini (30th) easily dismissed Anna-Lena Friedsam (115th) 6-3, 6-2. The double to follow is now without issue.

Italy, which beat France on Wednesday, finished at the top of this group of three, and is qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Paolini dominated Caroline Garcia (20th) on Wednesday, and Trevisan defeated Alizé Cornet (118th). Caroline Garcia/Kristina Mladenovic then won the doubles, for the honor.

The last match between France and Germany scheduled for Friday will also be without stakes.

Each match in the competition consists of two singles followed by a doubles. The first in each of the four groups advance to the semi-finals, scheduled for Saturday, before the final on Sunday.

The 2022 edition was won by Switzerland, victorious in the final over Australia.

In the other opposition of the afternoon, Australia beat Kazakhstan. Storm Hunter (172nd) brought the first point to Australia against Anna Danilina (814th) 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Then Yulia Putintseva (69th) equalized by beating Kimberley Birrell (113th) 6-0, 7-5.

The doubles, with the same players, made the difference, Australia winning in the tiebreaker 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

In the evening, Canada also qualified for the last four, easily beating Poland (2-0), after sweeping Spain the day before (3-0).

Finally, the United States beat Switzerland (2-0), without having to resort to doubles. The Americans will play their qualifier against the Czech Republic.
