(Berlin) Canada’s Bianca Andreescu lost in the first round at the Berlin Open, as Czech Marketa Vondrousova beat her 7-6 (0), 7-5, on Wednesday.

Andreescu surrendered after a duel lasting 1 hour 40 minutes.

The 23-year-old Ontarian had reached the second round in the Netherlands last week at the start of the grass season.

Andreescu, 35th in the world rankings, has now lost both of her career duels to 53rd-placed Vondrousova.

Other first-round matches on Wednesday include sixth-seeded Maria Sakkari’s 6-4, 6-2 win over AlizĂ© Cornet. For her part, Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4.
