On April 20, 2023, the Banque de France publishes a new report on “means of payment and fiduciary money”. The objective of the study is to know the habits of the French regarding financial transactions. What is the most used payment method? Contrary to public opinion, the species comes first. Cash and coins will represent 50% of transactions in 2022. Even more so, across the euro zone as a whole, this figure rises to 59%.

A large number of French people therefore choose to regularly withdraw money from the ATM. But Midi Libre informs us of the cost of these transactions applied by the banks. Indeed, for several years, customers have been billed for “inappropriate withdrawals”, that is to say those made at competing banks. Which brands are affected?

Most banks like Le Crédit Lyonnais (LCL) or La Banque Nationale de Paris Paribas (BNP Paribas) charge for “displaced withdrawals”. Indeed, if you do more than three in a competing institution, your bank will charge you one euro at the end of the month. Some have even increased this cost. Banque Populaire Occitane now charges one euro and thirty cents.

According to the comparator Panorabanques taken over by Midi Libre, bank withdrawal fees increased by nearly 48% between 2021 and 2023. The only ones not applying this increase for the moment are online banks. Nevertheless, some establishments have decided to offer joint vending machines to limit costs for customers. Indeed, BNP Paribas, CIC and Société Générale have created Cash Services distributors.
