(New York) Laval’s Leylah Annie Fernandez and Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski reached the third round of the U.S. Open in women’s doubles on Saturday.

Fernandez and American Taylor Townsend defeated Spaniards Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova 6-2, 7-5 in 1 hour 27 minutes of play.

The Canadian-American duo are seeded sixth. In the next round, Fernandez and Townsend will face Czech Karolina Pliskova and Croatian Donna Vekic.

For their part, Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe, seeded 16th, defeated China’s Zhu Lin and Taiwan’s Fang-hsien Wu 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

In the next round, Dabrowski and Routliffe will cross swords with the Czechs Barbora Strycova and Marketa Vondrousova.

Dabrowski and Fernandez’s teams will meet in the quarter-finals if they both win their next game.

Dabrowski, 31, reached the women’s doubles semifinals at the 2021 US Open with Brazil’s Luisa Stefani. The latter had to give up during this match due to a knee injury.

Routliffe and Dabrowski are in their fourth tournament together. They began their association in August at the National Bank Open in Montreal.

Fernandez and Townsend reached the final at the French Open earlier this year. They had beaten Dabrowski and Stefani along the way in the third round. They also reached the final at the Miami Open.
