(Toronto) The tentative agreement between Unifor and Ford Motor will solidify the foundation on which the union will continue to negotiate gains for future generations of auto workers in Canada, Unifor president said Wednesday. Lana Payne.

The union reached a tentative agreement late Tuesday after extending Monday’s strike deadline by 24 hours.

The new agreement covers more than 5,600 workers at Ford plants in Canada.

In addition to increasing wages, Unifor had indicated that its key priorities were pensions and issues related to job security and the transition to electric vehicles.

The agreement, which still needs to be ratified by union members, is expected to set expectations for Unifor’s contract negotiations with General Motors and Stellantis.

The tentative agreement with Ford comes as U.S. auto workers continue to strike at Ford as well as plants at General Motors and Stellantis.
