(Toronto) Negotiations between the Unifor union and the automaker General Motors of Canada on a new collective agreement were to begin Tuesday.

The negotiations involve about 4,300 workers at Ontario facilities including the automaker’s St. Catharines powertrain plant, Oshawa assembly complex and Woodstock parts distribution center.

Unifor announced Monday that GM would be the next target company in its negotiations with American automakers.

The talks come after workers represented by the Ford Motor of Canada union voted this weekend to approve a new contract that Unifor plans to use as a model in its talks with GM and Stellantis.

The agreement with Ford included wage increases, pension and benefit improvements, and special transition measures to electric vehicles for workers at Ford’s Oakville, Ontario assembly plant.

It also added two new paid holidays.
