(Toronto) Laval resident Dan Martin was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Australian Aleksandar Vukic on Saturday in the first round of qualifying for the National Bank Tennis Open.

Martin was one of five Canadians on the qualifying board in Toronto.

In another game early in the day, Diego Schwartzman of Argentina defeated Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Playing his first ATP match, Justin Boulais of Oakville was defeated 6-0, 6-3 by Corentin Moutet of France.

Brayden Schnur of Pickering, Ont., edged Maxime Cressy 4-6, 7-6 (2), 7-5.

Peter Polansky of Thornhill, Ont., was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by Max Purcell.

Eight main draw berths are at stake in qualifying.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime are two of the headliners in the $7.62m tournament.
