(Washington) Maria Sakkari has won the last four games en route to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over top seed Jessica Pegula in the Citi Open semifinals on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded Greek Sakkari is trying to win a second career title at this launch pad to Flushing Meadows.
She led 4-1 in the second set before Pegula forced a third set, with the temperature over 30 degrees Celsius.
“Ideally sure would have finished things an hour earlier,” Sakkari said. In the third set, I just tried to stay in the moment and see it as a new challenge. »
She will face Coco Gauff on Sunday, winning 6-3, 6-3 over defending champion Liudmila Samsonova.
Sakkari is 0-5 in finals on hard courts.
In the evening, the favorite Taylor Fritz will play against Tallon Griekspoor, before a duel between Grigor Dimitrov and Dan Evans.
Fritz, Griekspoor and Evans had to play twice on Friday, after much of Thursday’s schedule was postponed by rain.
