After only two seasons of existence, the Trois-Rivières Lions are undergoing a major overhaul.

The Lions announced Thursday that Pascal Rhéaume, who had served as an assistant coach since the team’s inception, has been promoted to head coach and general manager.

In the same breath, the felines announced the departure of Marc-André Bergeron, who was CEO and vice-president of hockey operations. Last November, the former defender also had to go behind the bench to take over after the departure of head coach Éric Bélanger.

These announcements come on the eve of the opening of the ECHL free agent market.

In comments reported by Le Nouvelliste, Rhéaume explained that he had taken steps to become head coach in the QMJHL.

“I had no news, I had started to explore other options, he told the Trois-Rivières daily. But this opportunity is perfect for me. I stay here, I know the organization well and I know the ECHL better from having worked there for the past two years. I felt ready two years ago for the pilot position, I submitted my application. I can say that I am even more ready today. »

The Lions have had two turbulent seasons so far. Eliminated in the 1st round in the spring of 2022, they missed the playoffs this season. Their attendances have dropped from 2,900 spectators per game in Year 1 to 2,617 this season, according to HockeyDB data, and the team is in dispute with the City of Trois-Rivières over the payment of the rental fees for the Videotron Coliseum. The municipal administration also sent a formal notice to Deacon Sports and Entertainment last May.
