Preview of today’s shows at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

“Pioneer” and “pillar” are the two words that best define DJ Premier. Since the end of the 1980s, as part of the group Gang Starr with the late Guru, Preemo has amazed us with his thundering beats and inventive scratches. Proud representative of hip-hop culture, he tells it with passion and rigor. Unifying and respected, he has worked with everyone: Jay-Z, Nas, Snoop Dogg, but also Christina Aguilera and Janet Jackson. With The Badder Band, DJ Premier will offer a show that will celebrate 50 years of hip-hop.

Just imagine: music with shamanic roots and tinged with K-Pop, delivered by an ensemble wearing extravagant costumes who also do choreography… Can’t miss that, right? The group is called ADG7, they are from South Korea (like in K-Pop, yes) and their strange folk might just be one of the most unusual proposals of the festival!

The return of the 66-year-old French multi-instrumentalist, singer, percussionist and composer is one of those little joys that the atmosphere of a real jazz club provides, located a stone’s throw from the festival site and which should not be missed! Of Martinican descent, Cinelu is Miles Davis, Weather Report, The Headhunters, Buckshot Lefonque (Branford Marsalis) as a licensed member, studio or tour musician with music greats, from Stevie Wonder to Elton John, from Peter Gabriel to Alain Bashung. It is easy to imagine him taking on heavy responsibilities in the company of scholars like Brochu and Thouin.
