(Newark) Dougie Hamilton broke a tie in the third period, allowing the New Jersey Devils to overcome the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Thursday.

Hamilton beat Ville Husso with a quick shot from the point at 15:37, helping the Devils pick up where they left off last season, when they had 112 points.

Jack Hughes scored twice in the second period for the Devils and Jonas Siegenthaler was complicit in three goals for his team.

Erik Haula made it 4-2 in an empty cage, but Robby Fabbri reduced the gap with 34 seconds remaining in the match.

Alex DeBrincat and Daniel Sprong also threaded the needle for the Red Wings. DeBrincat, a Michigan native, was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in July.

After Sprong opened the scoring at 12:14 in the second, Hughes responded on the power play. Hughes managed to put the puck in the net despite a difficult angle.

Hughes then scored with a shot from the top of the slot at 18:43 to give the Devils the lead.

The American, who led his team with 43 goals and 99 points in 2022-23, received cheers from the crowd, who chanted “MVP! MVP! » after his second goal. The top pick in the 2019 draft finished eighth in the Hart Trophy voting last season.

Vitek Vanecek stopped 32 pucks in the victory, while Husso was the target of 26 shots at the other end of the ice.
