(Kansas City) The Kansas City Chiefs and reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes have reportedly restructured their 10-year, $450 million deal that would see his salary increase significantly over the next four seasons, according to what the Associated Press has learned.
A person familiar with the negotiations spoke on condition of anonymity to the American news agency because they are not authorized to discuss the contract.
The revised deal guarantees Mahomes more money for the next four seasons and the $210.6 million guaranteed over that span is the most in NFL history.
Mahomes will make 56.85 million this season; 44.5 million in 2024; 50 million in 2025 and 56.76 million for the 2026 season.
At that point, the Chiefs and Mahomes, who is 28, are expected to revise their pact through 2031.
Mahomes had already set the mark for the most lucrative contract in NFL history, but several quarterbacks have gotten more money annually since, including Deshaun Watson (Cleveland), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia), Lamar Jackson (Baltimore ), Justin Herbert (Los Angeles) and Joe Burrow (Cincinnati).
The Chiefs were waiting to see what kind of deals Herbert and Burrow would get before restructuring Mahomes’ contract.
