(Washington) Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has decided to retire, The Associated Press has learned.

This source requested anonymity since Strasburg has not yet made its decision public. Strasburg would hold a press conference before a game at Nationals Park in September.

The Washington Post first reported the news.

Strasburg was the first-ever overall pick in the 2009 draft and the 2019 World Series MVP, but his career has been dogged by injuries.

The Gunner, who turned 35 last month, underwent surgery for thoracobrachial crossing syndrome since winning the World Series, a procedure that required the removal of a rib and two neck muscles.

The right-hander hasn’t pitched since June 9, 2022. His only start this season lasted just four and two-thirds innings and his name was subsequently placed on the disabled list again. He has thrown just 528 shots in the Majors since signing a seven-year, $245 million contract in December 2019.

Strasburg underwent ligament reconstruction in 2012, ending a stellar 15-6, 3.16 season. Without their ace, the Nationals lost in the sectional playoffs to the St. Louis Cardinals.
