Future Nostalgia allowed Dua Lipa to establish herself as one of the dominant forces in pop, making us dance in our living rooms as if the pandemic didn’t exist. A red color later, would she prove to us her ability to stay in the leading pack? Her announced collaboration with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala suggested a psychedelic turn, but Dua Lipa keeps both feet on the dance floor here. Thanks to the instantly recognizable touch of Parker (co-producer of the song with Danny L Harle, one of the key artists of hyperpop), however, we feel transported to a more illicit club than Studio 54 where Future Nostalgia seemed camped. Through constantly changing motifs, we have the impression of discovering hidden rooms of a clandestine disco, but Dua Lipa’s personality and sense of melody remain in the foreground and assure us that we are in the presence of ‘a future hit.

Let’s call on our memory: where have we heard, before, these rock sounds with fat, saturated guitars, accompanied by a precise and relaxed female voice? Yes, in the world of Lucy Dacus (Boygenius). And at Black Belt Eagle Scout. We also think of the beginnings of Angel Olsen and Cat Power, a little. This song sets the stage for the new album by American-Russian Jew Anna Beckerman – who here takes the stage name Daneshevskaya –, Lost In the Tunnel. Promising and catchy.

Paolo Philpot, from the group Cherry Chérie, sings here about the arrival of his first daughter, the fear linked to the first months of his partner’s pregnancy and his desire to shout the happy news from the rooftops. No, he is not the first to venture onto this very slippery terrain of fatherhood where, let us write, a large number of future artist-dads have broken their noses before him. But it is not the case here ! The rock and above all unpretentious tempo saves the day, as does the presence of talented musicians (kudos to the playing of Gabriel Lapointe on drums). We hum this “Elenaaaaaa” with pleasure while waiting for a full album by Filpo in spring 2024.
