(Ottawa) Read the reports of the games played Saturday in the NHL.
Jakob Chychrun and Brady Tkachuk scored doubles to help the Ottawa Senators win 5-2 against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
Jake Sanderson also scored for the Senators. Anton Forsberg made 19 saves, being beaten by Travis Konecny and Cam York.
Chychrun first scored at 2:36 in the first period, using a wrist shot.
Thanks to Ridly Greig’s forecheck, Zack MacEwen grabbed the puck in the corner of the ice and spotted Chychrun, in the heart of the opposing zone. The 25-year-old American scored his first goal this season.
Chychrun re-edited at 10:47, with the Flyers’ Sean Couturier in the dugout.
Vladimir Tarasenko passed to him in the left circle and Chychrun hit the target on a reception into the top of the net.
Konecny closed the gap to 16:51 in the first period. He converted the rebound of a Tyson Foerster shot, with the visitors playing five on three.
There were three more goals in the middle period, including Sanderson’s power play at 16:12.
Just 16 seconds later, York kept the Flyers in the game with a precise shot, following a nice pass to himself via the boards.
At 19:54, however, Tkachuk scored from the slot, following a pass from Claude Giroux. The latter had just taken the disc away from Travis Sanheim.
At 1:32 in the third period, Tkachuk consolidated the cushion by stopping a shot from Tim Stutzle to direct the puck into the goal, after a fake.
The Senators will play again on Sunday evening at home, against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Carter Hart stopped 26 shots for the Flyers, who had shot just nine times after 40 minutes.
The Flyers will play their first home game on Tuesday, against the Vancouver Canucks.
Kyle Connor scored two goals and added an assist in a 6-4 victory for the Winnipeg Jets against the Florida Panthers on Saturday.
Mark Scheifele and Mason Appleton also chipped in with a goal and an assist and Dylan DeMelo also scored in the Jets’ home opener.
Josh Morrissey had two goals and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 29 pucks for the Jets, who began a three-game stretch at Canada Life Center
Evan Rodrigues had two goals and two assists for the Panthers. Sam Reinhart had two points, including a goal. Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov both had two assists. Tkachuk earned his 300th career assist.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves for Florida, which was playing the second game of a three-game road series.
The score was 1-1 after one period, but the Jets led 4-2 after the second.
Scheifele scored 33 seconds into a power play after receiving a pass from Connor. He beat Bobrovsky to the glove side at 3:30 of the first period. The Panthers responded on a power play, courtesy of Reinhart.
Rodrigues gave the visitors the lead at the start of the second, but the Jets then scored four unanswered goals to record their first victory of the campaign.
The Panthers will visit the New Jersey Devils on Monday, while the Jets will host the Los Angeles Kings the next day.
