(London) Luke Donald was confirmed as captain of the European Ryder Cup team on Wednesday, ahead of the 2025 edition in New York and in the wake of Europe’s success last month against the United States -United.

“I am delighted and honored to once again be entrusted with the task of leading the European team to the Ryder Cup,” reacted Donald, 45, who had the support of the players to return to this position, which constitutes a first in more than two decades.

Since 1997, the custom was for a European captain to officiate only once, the last to have extended being the Scot Bernard Gallacher, at the head of Europe during the 1991, 1993 and 95 editions.

“The Ryder Cup means so much to me… I have been fortunate as a player to experience some incredible moments in the Ryder Cup over the years,” commented Luke Donald, who also won five PGA Tour titles as a player, between 2002 and 2012.

“To have become a victorious Ryder Cup captain, to have created bonds with 12 players as was the case in Italy […], it’s really something very special,” continued the one who succeeded the last year to Henryk Stenson, after the Swede joined the dissident LIV circuit.

At the end of September and beginning of October, Europe remained uncompromising at home, dominating the United States, during the 44th edition of this biannual competition organized for the first time in Italy.

This was the 7th consecutive defeat for “Team USA” on European soil.

However, the matter will be quite different in two years in the United States, where Europe has not imposed itself since 2012.

In the Ryder Cup, an event created in 1927, the United States still largely leads with 27 victories to 15, and two draws.
