(Philadelphia) Michael Lorenzen of the Philadelphia Phillies went 0-0 against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Making just his second start with his new club, Lorenzen scored the 14th such feat in Phillies history, winning 7-0.

The 31-year-old right-hander struck out five batters and allowed four walks.

“I haven’t had a ton of strikeouts,” Lorenzen said. The batted balls can go all over the place. I just had the grace of God. »

The former Tigers is 2-0 with the Phillies. The latter acquired him at the trade deadline, in return for a minor league player.

The first out in the ninth was Lane Thomas, grounding, then Lorenzen disposed of Joey Meneses at bat, by umpire decision.

The crowd of 30,406 celebrated when the Californian retired Dominic Smith on a fly ball to center field. Lorenzen needed 124 shots.

With their baby June in his arms, his wife Cassi was moved to tears in the stands, as was Lorenzen’s mother, Cheryl.

Defending National champions, the Phillies are battling with the Giants for the first of the additional playoff berths.

The match reached a point where there were questions about whether manager Rob Thomson would leave Lorenzen in the game.

He got the job done and became the first Philles pitcher to go without a run or hit since 2015 (Cole Hamels, July 25). Hamels retired last week.

It was the first such game the Nationals have suffered in 19 years since moving to Washington following the departure from Montreal.

Lorenzen was one of the stars of the American with Detroit this year.

In his first outing with Philadelphia, he worked nine innings and gave up only two runs last week.

Lorenzen was a longtime reliever before becoming a starter with the Angels and Tigers in recent years.

It was the fourth game without a run or hit in the majors this season.

Framber Valdez of the Astros was superb against the Guardians on August 1; Domingo German of the Yankees was brilliant in Oakland on June 28. The other was combined: Matt Manning, Alex Lange and Jason Foley of the Tigers made the splash on July 8, against the Blue Jays.

Weston Wilson homered in his first major league at-bat, after 706 games at the plate in the minors. He was drafted in 2016, in the 17th round.

Nick Castellanos drove in three runs with two long balls.

Bryce Harper drove a runner home with a double, while Johan Rojas and Alec Bohm did the same via singles.

Mackenzie Gore (6-9) allowed six runs and seven hits in five innings.
