(Los Angeles) The Los Angeles Rams have reached a deal with quarterback Carson Wentz, according to a person familiar with the pact who spoke with The Associated Press.

This source requested anonymity to speak with the AP on Tuesday because Wentz must undergo a medical examination before the contract is made official.

Wentz has not played in the NFL this season after getting seven starts last season with the Washington Commanders. The veteran was the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles for five seasons, and he was the starter for the Indianapolis Colts for all 17 games in 2021.

The Rams (3-6) were looking for a quarterback to support Matthew Stafford, who missed last weekend’s game against the Packers in Green Bay due to a thumb injury.

Reserve Brett Rypien was the Rams’ only other quarterback available before Stafford’s injury, and he completed 13 of 28 pass attempts and had two fumbles and an interception in a 20-3 loss to the Packers.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday that he was under the impression Stafford would be at his position next week, after the team’s bye week. Wentz’s signing, however, suggests that the Rams want an insurance policy if Stafford’s injury takes time to heal or if he has to aggravate it.
