(New York) NEW YORK-Aaron Judge hit three homers in a game for the first time in his career on Wednesday, leading the New York Yankees to a 9-1 win over the Washington Nationals.
Judge had a grand slam and two solo long balls as the Yankees snapped a nine-game losing streak.
“We’ve been waiting for him to have a three-home run game for a long time,” said teammate Kyle Higashioka, himself the author of such a feat on September 16, 2020, against Toronto. There, we have nothing more to tease him. ยป
The Yankees had scored a point or zero in five of their last nine games.
Two hours after GM Brian Cashman used the words “a disaster” to describe the Yankees’ season (61-65), Judge got the ball rolling in the first inning against Mackenzie Gore (6-10).
He got a fifth career grand slam in the sixth, then he added a cannon shot in the seventh.
The American’s most valuable player last year, Judge is hitting .279 this season, with 27 homers and 54 RBIs.
He set the single-season home run record in the American last year, with 62.
Luis Severino (3-8) gave up only one hit in six and two-thirds innings.
He was 0-4 since beating the Royals on July 23.
Harrison Bader made a brilliant catch by diving to center field in the sixth, at the expense of Lane Thomas.
