Canadian Bianca Andreescu and Danish Caroline Wozniacki will play their first match at the National Bank Tennis Open on Tuesday, August 8 at IGA Stadium.

Tennis Canada made the announcement in a press release Wednesday morning.

Andreescu, who won the tournament in 2019 in Toronto in the midst of the biggest year of his young career, will take part in the scheduled evening session. This will be his seventh appearance at the Canadian tournament.

As for Wozniacki, she will play in the day session in what will be her first official game in over three years.

Aged 33 and former world number one, Wozniacki announced her retirement in January 2020 after a third-round defeat at the Australian Open, a tournament she had won two years earlier.

In 2010, Wozniacki won the women’s singles in Montreal with a win over Vera Zvonareva.

Andreescu’s and Wozniacki’s first-round opponents will be known no earlier than August 4, the day of the official draw.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce the sessions which will feature two former champions, Caroline Wozniacki and Bianca Andreescu,” said Valérie Tétreault, director of the National Bank Open, in the Tennis Canada press release.

The exercise is all the more difficult, she recalled, as several factors can influence the calendar, in particular the fact that the players can also play doubles.

“However, we know that this is information that our fans value and that is why we have worked hard to confirm certain matches,” she added.
