(Montreal) A French airline catering company formally denies having employed undocumented workers in its Montreal facilities or having used their precarious status to exploit them.

Newrest, which prepares meals for airlines, said in an email that it “scrupulously” complies with Canadian and Quebec employment and immigration laws.

The company is named in a class action request that alleges more than 400 people were lured to Canada under false pretenses by a Laval employment agency.

The lawsuit claims that the majority of these people were lured into working for Newrest – even though they did not have work permits – and that they were regularly paid below minimum wage and subject to other abuses.

Newrest says it takes these complaints seriously and is carrying out a “further investigation”.

The company, which has operated in Canada since 2010, claims to have never been sanctioned by Canadian authorities.
