Boston Bruins rookies John Beecher and Mason Lohrei scored their first NHL goals less than four minutes apart in the first period in a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Monday.
Brad Marchand added a power play goal in the third and Jeremy Swayman stopped 34 pucks for the Bruins, who lead the Eastern Conference at 10-1-1. It was Marchand’s sixth goal this season.
The Stars had removed their goalie in favor of a sixth skater when Joe Pavelski scored his fifth goal with 27 seconds remaining in the game.
They then got a power play with 5.7 seconds remaining on the clock when Hampus Lindholm took a tripping penalty, but was unable to take advantage.
Wyatt Johnston, who was one of the best rookies on the circuit last season, hit the target for a fourth time by deflecting a shot from Esa Lindell after about five minutes of play in the final period.
Beecher, 22, was the Bruins’ first-round pick in 2019. He scored with a wrist shot after rounding the net midway through the first.
Lohrei made it 2-0 from the top of the slot after accepting a pass from Danton Heinen at 5:51 remaining in the first period. The 22-year-old defenseman, a second-round pick in 2020, had an assist in his debut on Thursday and was playing in only his third game.
It was the first time two rookies scored their first goal in the same game for the Bruins since Jake DeBrusk and Charlie McAvoy against the Nashville Predators on October 5, 2017.
Jake Oettinger stopped 26 pucks for the Stars, who were playing with 11 forwards and seven defensemen due to injuries to Radek Faksa and Matt Duchene.
Calle Jarnkrok scored his second goal of the game 46 seconds into overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-5 on Monday.
Mitch Marner had a goal and three assists for the Maple Leafs (5-4-2), while Auston Matthews scored two goals and added an assist. Matthew Knies had a goal and two assists and defenseman Morgan Rielly assisted on two of his team’s goals.
Jarnkrok scored his third of the season, in overtime, when Rielly fed him the puck very close to the net, unguarded. Jarnkrok only had to redirect the puck behind Jonas Johansson.
Ilya Samsonov allowed four goals on 12 shots and gave way to Joseph Woll late in the first period. Woll stopped 18 pucks for the win.
With an assist on the winning goal, William Nylander extended his record streak in Maple Leafs history, with 12 straight games to start the season with at least one point.
Nikita Kucherov scored two goals and two assists in the first period for the Lightning (5-4-3). Victor Hedman scored and added two assists, while forwards Brayden Point and Brandon Hagel both contributed a goal and an assist. Johansson made 27 saves.
Trailing 4-3 after 40 minutes, the Maple Leafs tied the game 1:55 into the third period. Jarnkrok scored his first goal of the game when he recovered Nick Robertson’s return shot.
Marner gave his team the lead just eight seconds later, with a quick shot from the far side. It was Marner’s fifth of the season.
Hagel tied the score at 5-5 with 2:26 left in regulation. Woll was unable to control Calvin de Haan’s shot, and Hagel pushed the loose puck into the net for his seventh of the campaign.
The Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead in the game thanks to Knies’ goal 3:42 into the game. Hedman, however, tied the game 35 seconds later, the first of four Lightning goals in the first period.
Nick Cousins tied the game in the final minute of the third period, then Carter Verhaeghe scored in overtime, and the Florida Panthers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 on Monday.
The Panthers led 3-0 after just over six minutes of play, but allowed the next four goals before Cousins and Verhaeghe played hero.
Ryan Lomberg, Gustav Forsling and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 18 saves.
Sean Kuraly, Boone Jenner, Alexandre Texier and Kirill Marchenko responded for the Blue Jackets. Spencer Martin turned aside 35 pucks in relief of Elvis Merzlikins, who was pulled after giving up three times on 11 shots in 6:09 in the first.
Lomberg opened the scoring with a shot behind Merzlikins’ back, then Forsling added a goal 50 seconds later. Barkov then threaded the needle with his backhand while falling, which prompted Quebec Blue Jackets head coach Pascal Vincent to make a goalie change.
The Panthers led 20-0 in shots on goal from the 1:19 mark in the first until the Jackets’ first goal with 4:19 left in the period.
Kuraly recovered a return after a shot from Erik Gudbranson to deceive Bobrovsky’s vigilance. Jenner closed the gap a little more before the end of the first third.
Marchenko brought the two teams back to even footing on a power play midway through the second.
Texier took advantage of a loose puck in front of a completely open cage to give the Blue Jackets the lead with 7:30 left in regulation. But Cousins forced an overtime period moments later.
Former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Reilly made his debut with the Panthers after being left out of the team’s first 10 games this season.
