The consequences of the drought are being felt. Indeed, the government had announced a series of restrictions in the departments most plagued by aridity for the summer of 2023. But now, with the approach of July 14, it is the use of fireworks who questions. Already last summer, the fires and the climate in certain areas of French territory had led to the cancellation of around ten fires.

Before the July 14 parade, other fireworks are organized on the occasion of the Saint-Jean celebrations. But on June 24, 2023, many municipalities canceled this show. Indeed, a prefectural decree imposed their cancellation in the Bas-Rhin, as RTL specifies. In Saint-Nazaire, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, or even in Nordhouse in Alsace, the latter have also been banned. For good reason, these fireworks could cause fires.

“Of the 25 municipalities we called across France, 18 said they were worried and expected to see their July 14 fireworks canceled because the drought or heat wave will be too severe by then,” says the editorial staff of RTL. But others are still hesitant and could join the list of 5 municipalities that will not offer these lights in 2023. Find out which ones in our slideshow below.

Many mayors are not sure of being able to comply with the measures required by the drought decrees. Indeed, the latter impose not to shoot fireworks within 200 meters of vegetation. In rural areas, this rule becomes more difficult to follow. In addition, the question of security also comes into play. Last year, two people died following the fireworks in Cholet. Nevertheless, some municipalities are considering alternative solutions to maintain the festivities. To find out which cities have abandoned the idea altogether, check out our slideshow below.
