Hillary Clinton once wrote a letter to Saturday Night Live criticizing how the show portrayed her daughter, Chelsea.
That’s what actress and former SNL member Julia Sweeney told the Fly on the Wall podcast by comedians Dana Carvey and David Spade. Sweeney said that in 1993, during Bill Clinton’s presidency of the United States, the former first lady was so shocked that she wrote a letter to the producer of the weekly television show, Lorne Michaels.
In a sketch aired in January 1993 featuring Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks and Madonna (the musical guest), Julia Sweeney impersonated the couple’s daughter, with brooches, a puffy dress and a curly wig. The comedian pointed out that she “wasn’t trying to be ugly,” but in the end, aiming for a kid on TV probably wasn’t the idea of the century, reports Variety.
“I understood what Hillary meant, especially when I became a mother,” Sweeney said. It’s like, “Don’t play children.” It was a mistake. She was right. »
