We take the same and start again ? Insee (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) unveils this Tuesday, July 4, the ranking of the most given first names to children born in France in 2022. This ranking was produced based on files from the marital status.

The first name Gabriel regains its first place in the ranking of the most attributed first names in 2021, as reported by INSEE. After total domination from 2015 to 2019, he was relegated to second position by the first name Léo in 2020. Here are the five most popular male first names in France in 2022:

As for female names, the leading duo has not changed. To see changes you have to go a little lower in the ranking. Here is the ranking of the five most attributed female names of the year 2022:

As INSEE reminds us, the civil registrar can no longer refuse a first name chosen by the parents, and this, since 1993. The latter can also choose a first name already assigned, in France or abroad, or a diminutive, or even to create a first name according to their imagination, as explained on the administration site.

Among the only criteria to respect: not to choose a first name contrary to the interests of the child. If the civil registrar considers it rude or ridiculous, for example, he can notify the public prosecutor who can in turn notify the family affairs judge, as BFMTV explains. This magistrate can request the removal of the first name deemed to be in dispute from the civil status registers and even assign a first name to the child, if the parents do not change their minds.
