(Manchester) Briton Andy Murray (41st player in the world) gave his team the first point against Switzerland on Friday, before revealing that he had missed his grandmother’s funeral to play.

“Today is a difficult day for me, it’s the day of my grandmother’s funeral,” said a visibly emotional Murray after his stunning 6-7 (7/9), 6- 4, 6-4 against Leandro Riedi (152nd) at the Manchester Arena.

“I’m sorry to my family that I couldn’t be there. Grandma, this one’s for you,” he added, before returning to his seat on his bench and collapsing into his towel in tears.

Murray, 36, has lost only three of his last 35 singles matches in the competition, but he had to work hard to beat Riedi, 21, in a 3:10 fight min.

The British and Swiss are tied 1-1 after Stan Wawrinka defeated Cameron Norie 7-5, 6-4.
