(Edmonton) Dean Faithfull made a last-second 42-yard field goal Saturday, giving the Edmonton Elks a 25-23 victory over the Calgary Stampeders.
The Elks improved their performance to 3-10.
The Stampeders’ record slipped to 4-9, after this fourth loss in five outings.
The Elks scored a touchdown on their first drive, with Kevin Brown escaping 45 yards down the middle of the field into the pay zone.
Stampeders quarterback Jake Maier, however, quickly connected with Markeith Ambles for 35 yards, setting the stage for a 37-yard field goal by Rene Paredes.
Midway through the second quarter, Maier completed a three-yard touchdown pass to William Langlais.
At the very end of the engagement, the target on 10 yards was Reggie Begelton, for a score of 17-7 in favor of Calgary at the half.
A pass from the Elks’ Tre Ford was intercepted early in the third quarter by Brad Muhammad. The possession led to a 25-yard completion by Paredes. Later in the third quarter, Paredes scored from 29 yards out.
The Elks’ comeback began with a one-yard dive into the end zone for Taylor Cormelius, a reserve quarterback. It was at the start of the last quarter, during a third down.
Ford then connected with Eugene Lewis for 33 yards, before throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dillon Mitchell.
A failed convert put the Stamps in the lead by four points with nine minutes on the clock.
Four minutes later, the score became very close via a 40-yard field goal from Faithfull.
At the very end of the game, the Elks made enough progress to give Faithfull the chance to tip the scales.
He answered the call and Edmonton won a second straight game at home.
The Elks will play in Saskatchewan next Friday, while the Stampeders will have a week off.
