Logan Cooley will not return to the NCAA next season. The 2022 Arizona Coyotes first-round pick signed his National League entry contract on Thursday afternoon.

In May, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers announced that Cooley would return for the 2023-24 season. Two months later, the portrait has visibly changed. The 19-year-old forward finally opted for the NHL next season.

“We are thrilled to offer Logan an NHL contract,” Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong said in a statement. He is an incredibly talented player, who had a great season with the Golden Gophers. »

Cooley didn’t disappoint in his first year at Minnesota, finishing first in team scoring with 22 goals and 38 assists for 60 points in 39 games. Those stats also put him second in the NCAA in points. The Pittsburgh native also won bronze with the United States at the last Junior Worlds, amassing 14 points in seven games.

“[Logan] has established himself as one of the best prospects in the world,” Armstrong continued. He is a very important player for us, and he has a bright future ahead of him. We look forward to seeing him play for the Coyotes for many years to come. »

At the end of last season, Cooley was among the finalists for the Hobey Baker Trophy, which recognizes the outstanding hockey player on the university circuit in the United States. The honor ultimately went to Adam Fantilli.
