(Val-D’isère) Marco Odermatt drove through steadily falling snow and made mistakes on Saturday, but he still won a World Cup giant slalom by almost a second.

The Olympic, World and World Cup giant slalom champion is virtually unbeatable in his favorite discipline.

This time he beat Marco Schwarz by 0.98 seconds.

Joan Verdu, with the best ever World Cup result for Andorra, finished third, 1.32 seconds behind the winner.

Odermatt increased his lead from the first set in his decisive second set, even if he was at the limit of his balance at times.

“A lot of little mistakes,” Odermatt admitted. Visibility was very, very limited. I had a bit of trouble at the top. »

The victory for Odermatt, 26, tied Italian Alberto Tomba with 15 World Cup giant slalom victories.

It was a 25th career World Cup victory for the two-time defending overall World Cup champion.

Canadian Erik Read finished in 19th position.

Saturday’s event was only the second official men’s World Cup race affected by weather conditions. There were cancellations and the abandonment of a giant slalom that was to kick off the season in Sölden, Austria.
