(San Diego) Beatriz Haddad Maia did not have to wait long before taking her revenge against Leylah Fernandez, after their long duel at the National Bank Open in August, in Montreal.

The Brazilian and seventh seed eliminated Fernandez in three sets of 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 on Tuesday during the second day of women’s singles action at the San Diego Open.

Laval’s Fernandez had defeated Haddad Maia twice in their last three meetings, including his 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory on Aug. 9 at IGA Stadium.

Haddad Maia scored three aces in the two-hour, 37-minute duel. Fernandez committed 12 double faults compared to just one for her rival.

Meanwhile, Canadian Rebecca Marino showed the way out to seventh-seeded Japanese Nao Hibino at the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka.

Marino beat Hibino 6-3, 6-4 and will now face American Elizabeth Mandlik.
