(Boston) Davis Schneider homered in his first major league at-bat on Friday, helping the Toronto Blue Jays win 7-3 at the expense of the Boston Red Sox.

The Blue Jays’ 28th-round pick in 2017, Schneider learned earlier Friday that he was moving from AAA to the big club.

He pulled off his stunt in the second set, sending a slippery ball past the Green Monster.

“I was smiling the whole time I went around the trails and into the dugout,” said the 24-year-old. The guys made me feel comfortable as soon as I walked into the locker room. Seeing them cheering when I came back into the dugout was pretty special. »

In 87 games with the Buffalo branch, Schneider hit 21 home runs this season.

“He deserved to come play with us and what a great time for him,” Blue Jays manager John Scheider said. We couldn’t imagine a better scenario. I’m happy for him. »

The Blue Jays hit five long balls, tying their best tally of 2023.

Whit Merrifield, Vladimir Guerrero, Daulton Varsho and Matt Chapman also homered for the Blue Jays, who were beginning a seven-game road trip.

The Merrifield home run came on the first shot of the game. That of Guerrero was obtained on the fourth shot by James Paxton (6-3).

Holders of the last place giving access to the playoffs in the American, Toronto now has a cushion of three games in front of Boston.

Alek Manoah (3-8) allowed three runs and six hits in six and two-thirds innings, striking out five batters.

“It’s helped me a lot to take the lead a lot,” Manoah said. I was able to really attack the strike zone. My sliding was working well and I was accurate with the fastball. I just wanted to keep a rhythm and then give way to our hitters. »

With the score 4-2 and runners on first and second, catcher Danny Jansen had a great play in the fourth inning for the Blue Jays. Very alert, he went to catch a foul ball from Adam Duvall at the end of the space behind him, a little to his left. Triston Casas then hit a double play ball, allowing the Blue Jays to walk away undamaged.

Jarren Duran and Yu Chang have homered for the Red Sox, who have lost five of their last six games.

Paxton gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings.

Still on the side of the Red Sox, infielder Justin Turner missed a third game in a row due to a bruised left heel.

Jose Berrios will start the Blue Jays on Saturday, while the Red Sox will start the game off with a reliever.

Berrios is 0-2 in his last six starts. The game will start at 4:10 p.m.
