(Calgary) Canada’s top technical authority on cybersecurity said it was working closely with Suncor Energy following a high-profile breach of the energy giant’s computer systems.
The Canadian Center for Cyber Security (CCC) said it could not release details of the cybersecurity incident that caused payment systems to fail at many Suncor-owned Petro-Canada gas stations. across the country last week.
Sami Khoury, boss of the CCC – which leads Canada’s federal response to cybersecurity incidents – says mitigation efforts at Suncor are still ongoing and sharing information too hastily could jeopardize those efforts.
Suncor did not provide details on what type of cyberattack it suffered, or whether any of its other businesses were affected.
Some experts have estimated that the breach of Suncor’s systems would likely cost the company millions of dollars before it is resolved.
Khoury said the Canadian Center for Cyber Security recently briefed high-level leaders in the oil and natural gas industry on how to reduce the cybersecurity risk facing that industry.
