(Brampton) Germany secured a berth in the quarterfinals of the World Women’s Hockey Championship by defeating Hungary 2-1 in their final group stage match on Tuesday.

Hungary, with a victory in four games, will finish fourth in the standings in Group B at best, which will have the effect of relegating them for the next edition of the tournament. The five teams from Group A advance to the quarters, but only the top three from Group B.

Germany will finish second in Group B, behind Finland.

Defender Ronja Hark opened the scoring 10:34 from the first for Germany. Striker Nicola Eisenschmid doubled that lead in the first minute of the first period.

Hungary quickly closed the gap after the break, when Reka Dabasi hit the back of the net just 49 seconds into the game.

Goalkeeper Sandra Abstreiter then fended off all of the Hungarians’ attacks, finishing the game with 36 saves. Her counterpart, Aniko Nemeth, stopped 24 of 26 shots aimed at her.
