Groupe TVA announced on Friday the end of its weekend newscasts in Quebec. A measure in effect from the week of June 19.

Its owner, Quebecor, says its decision was inevitable in the “current media reality.” He attributes it “to fierce competition from web giants and Radio-Canada, significant declines in advertising revenue, as well as a costly and unfair regulatory framework.”

Groupe TVA will maintain reporting teams to cover the news of the national capital on Saturdays and Sundays, but it will instead feed the TVA Nouvelles network, as well as the continuous news channel LCN. Weekly news bulletins in Quebec are maintained.

“Producing information and programming reflecting the different regions of Quebec requires significant investments, and in the current economic and competitive context, we find ourselves unable to maintain the status quo,” said the President and CEO of Quebecor, Pierre Karl PĂ©ladeau.
