(New York) Vasek Pospisil’s stamina was tested, but the 33-year-old British Columbian advanced through the first round of U.S. Open qualifying with a 7-6 (7 ), 6-7 (3), 6-4 against Spaniard Pedro Martinez.

The match lasted three hours 29 minutes. It ended when Pospisil was able to break his rival’s serve for a fifth time in the match.

Pospisil, 196th in the ATP rankings, hit 11 aces against six double faults, while Martinez, 131st, did not hit an ace but committed seven double faults.

At the end of the match, Pospisil had won only three points more than his opponent, 123 against 120.

In the next round, Pospisil will face American Zachary Svajda, 235th in the world.

21-year-old Montrealer Gabriel Diallo had a date with Belgium’s Kimmer Coppejans later today in another first-round qualifying match.

Yesterday, Eugenie Bouchard passed the first qualifying round, while Katherine Sebov and Alexis Galarneau were eliminated.

In the second round, Bouchard will face Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, seeded 12th in the women’s singles qualifying draw.
