Actress Sophie Turner filed a lawsuit on Thursday against her husband, musician Joe Jonas, demanding that their two children be returned to England.

The couple announced their plans to divorce this month.

Sophie Turner said Joe Jonas refused to give her the children’s passports, preventing them from returning to their “habitual residence” in England, according to a motion filed in the Southern District Court of New York.

The children have dual American and British nationality, according to court documents, which identify them by the initials W. R. J. (for the child born in 2020) and D. M. J. (for the child born in 2022).

Jeff Raymond, a representative for Joe Jonas, said by email that an order filed in court in Florida, where the divorce proceedings were initiated, prohibited the parents from moving the children. If Jonas provided the passports to Turner, he would be violating this order.

“Joe seeks to share parental responsibility for the children so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and he is of course fine with the children being raised in both the United States and the United Kingdom -United, specifies the press release. The children were born in the United States and have spent most of their lives there. »

Sophie Turner, who is English, and Jonas, who is American, began dating in October 2016 and married in Las Vegas in May 2019. Their marriage broke up “very suddenly,” Turner’s petition states, who said she learned through the media that Joe Jonas had filed for divorce. Representatives for Joe Jonas deny this claim, specifying that numerous conversations took place and that “Sophie was aware that Joe was filing for divorce.”

According to Sophie Turner’s petition, the spouses moved frequently due to their respective careers. The couple decided to move to England while there for Christmas in 2022, and made it their permanent residence in April 2023, the petition states.

“Throughout their marriage, and particularly after the birth of their children, the parties often discussed their desire to raise and educate their children in England,” the motion states. “The parties viewed England as a safe place to raise their children. »

In July, the couple exchanged contracts with sellers to purchase a home in Oxford, England, with a sale completion date scheduled for Dec. 2, according to the motion.

The couple jointly announced their divorce in identical statements posted to their Instagram accounts on September 6. “There is much speculation about the reasons for this divorce, but it is truly a joint decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for our children and us,” the statement said .

In one of her first public appearances since announcing the divorce, Sophie Turner was seen this week with Taylor Swift at Via Carota, a restaurant in New York City.
