(London) Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo defeated Turkey’s Cem Ilkel 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying.

Diallo, 140th in the world, will face Matteo Gigante in the next round. The 254th-ranked Italian defeated Britain’s Harry Wendelken 6-3, 7-6 (6).

The six-foot-eight Quebecer is the 29th seed in the qualifying draw. He needs three wins to earn a spot in the main draw.

Vasek Pospisil did not suffer the same fate. The British Columbian lost 6-2, 7-6 (2) to Brazilian Felipe Meligeni Alves.

Three Canadians are entered in qualifying, including Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard, who will face Belgium’s Greet Minnen.

Ontario’s Carol Zhao will play her first match against Britain’s Emily Appleton. Toronto’s Katherine Sebov must face Italian Nuria Brancaccio.
