(Philadelphia) The Philadelphia Phillies have signed manager Rob Thomson to a one-year contract extension after he led the team to back-to-back National League Championship Series appearances.

Thomson, who is 60, is 155-118 since replacing Joe Girardi as Phillies manager on June 3, 2022. Thomson led the Phillies to the World Series in 2022, where they lost in six games to the Houston Astros. The Phillies returned to the NL Championship Series this season, but blew leads of 2-0 and 3-2 in Games 6 and 7 at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. .

Thomson helped lead the Phillies to a 90-72 record in 2023, confirming their first season with at least 90 wins since 2011. Last October, he also became the third manager in major league history to win 18 of his first 25 playoff games, joining Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel in that exclusive group.

He joined the Phillies in 2018, and was initially hired as a bench instructor under former manager Gabe Kapler.

Thomson has previously said he plans to retire after the 2022 season, before being named manager. He mentioned after last season that he has no plans to leave his position, and that he would rather manage the Phillies until they thank him for his services.
