(Stewiacke) A minor hockey coach in Nova Scotia faces an assault charge in connection with a referee who was allegedly assaulted during a game on the weekend.

The Colchester County District of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) received a complaint Saturday morning from an arena in Brookfield, south of Truro.

RCMP say they received reports that a coach assaulted a referee during a game, but the official was not injured.

The coach had left the arena before the police arrived, but then went to the Stewiacke detachment.

The man was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to face an assault charge, RCMP said.

The body that oversees amateur hockey in the province, Hockey Nova Scotia, said in a statement that the coach had been suspended indefinitely pending the outcome of an independent third-party investigation into the incident at the Don -Henderson Memorial Sportsplex in Brookfield.
