(Miami) Kim Ng leaves the Miami Marlins after three seasons as general manager.

Bruce Sherman, president and majority owner of the team, announced the news on Monday.

At 54, Ng became the highest-ranking woman in baseball operations and the first woman to be named general manager of a team in any of the four major professional sports leagues in North America. North, in a groundbreaking hire in November 2020.

The Marlins had activated their option clause which would have allowed Ng to remain in position in 2024, Sherman said in a press release, but she chose not to activate hers.

“Last week, Bruce and I discussed his plans to restructure baseball operations departments. In our discussions, it became apparent that we weren’t completely in agreement on what that should look like,” Ng told The Athletic on Monday.

“I felt it was best to step aside. I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Marlins family and fans for the time I spent in South Florida. This year was a big step forward for the organization. »

Ng named Skip Schumaker as manager ahead of the 2023 season. He guided the Marlins to an 84-78 record and their first playoff berth since the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

The last full season the Marlins made the playoffs was in 2003, when they won the World Series.

The Marlins lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the National League playoffs earlier in October.

Ng became the fifth person to hold this position in Marlins history. Sherman said the search for a replacement will begin immediately.
