(Cleveland) Quebecer Leylah Fernandez was beaten 6-3, 6-2 by Germany’s Tatjana Maria in the quarterfinals of the Cleveland tournament on Thursday.

Ranked 49th in the world, Maria prevailed in 84 minutes ahead of Fernandez, 72nd.

It was their first meeting.

Maria signed the two aces of the game, while Fernandez committed two of the three double faults.

Maria led 5-2 for breaks, in addition to winning 77% of the points played on her first serves.

Last weekend, Maria won the tournament in Barranquilla, Colombia.

She will face in the semi-final Sara Sorribes Tormo, who defeated Sloane Stephens 6-1, 6-3.

A champion at Flushing Meadows in 2017, Stephens was seeded ninth in Cleveland.
