(Toronto) Cineplex says box office receipts in June were $56 million, representing 98% of box office receipts in the similar period in 2019.

President and CEO Ellis Jacob says in a statement that the second quarter marks the first post-pandemic period where the industry has seen an improvement in movie supply.

He says the company is confident with an exciting release schedule for July, including Barbie, Oppenheimer and the upcoming Mission: Impossible.

The theater company points out that combined box office and food service revenues topped June 2019 results.

For the second quarter, box office revenue was approximately 87% of the same period in 2019, and combined revenue was 92% of four years ago.

The company’s first-quarter results released in May saw its loss narrow to 30.2 million as it continues to recover from pandemic-driven shutdowns.
