(London) The BBC announced Monday that it will broadcast a series with Netflix on the Lockerbie bombing in Scotland, which killed 270 people in December 1988.

According to a press release from the British audiovisual giant, the BBC and Netflix have asked World Productions to make Lockerbie, a six-part drama series based on the real events of the attack.

Pan Am Flight 103, bound for New York from London, was flying over the Scottish town of Lockerbie on December 21, 1988 when a bomb exploded in the cargo hold, killing all 259 people on board and 11 others on the ground.

This tragedy remains the worst terrorist attack ever committed in the United Kingdom. Only one person has been convicted: Libyan Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi, who died in 2012. He had always maintained his innocence.

The series will shed light on the aftermath of the bombing, including the ensuing transatlantic investigation and the trauma experienced by Lockerbie residents and the families of the victims.

Lockerbie will feature material from interviews with officers involved in the investigations that have “never been shared before”, according to the BBC statement.

“The Pan Am 103 disaster and the global manhunt it spawned was a defining event in world history,” said British novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Lee, who will direct the film. series.

Lockerbie will air first on the BBC and then on Netflix in the UK and around the world after filming will take place this year.
