(Toronto) Canadian Denis Shapovalov has withdrawn from the National Bank Open due to a knee injury.

Tennis Canada announced the news on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old Ontarian recently played at Wimbledon, reaching the round of 16 of the grass-court major.

“I am sad to announce my withdrawal from the National Bank Open. I’m doing everything I can to get my knee injury healed so I can get back to my activities. Unfortunately, I need more time. There is no greater honor than playing at home,” the Canadian player tweeted.

Shapovalov, 22nd in the ATP rankings, had his best run at the Canadian tennis championship in 2017, when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the third round before retiring in the semifinals.

Nick Kyrgios and Pablo Carreno Busta have also confirmed they are withdrawing from the Toronto stoppage of the ATP schedule.

Under the three forfeits, Emil Ruusuvuori, J.J. Wolf and Kei Nishikori advance to the main draw.
