Reshuffle: why Franck Riester could be thanked

This Monday July 17, 2023, Elisabeth Borne was confirmed at Matignon by Emmanuel Macron. However, the Prime Minister must reshuffle her government by the end of the week. If there is still doubt about the presence or not of such and such a minister within it, for Franck Riester the question no longer arises: the Minister in charge of Relations with Parliament will probably be replaced by the end of the week.

Franck Riester began his career at the UMP and then at Les Républicains. In 2017, he was expelled from the party because of his rapprochement with Emmanuel Macron, newly elected president. In 2018, the former right-wing executive was appointed Minister of Culture, then in 2020 he became Minister Delegate in charge of Foreign Trade and Attractiveness, before taking up his current position as Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament.

A very strategic position! While the Assembly is divided into ten very distinct parliamentary groups, Franck Riester must guarantee the government of Elisabeth Borne solid support in order to be able to vote on the bills of the presidential majority. His past LR commitment was to ensure a rapprochement with the right of the Assembly.

But, when it comes time to take stock, the oppositions like the presidential coalition agree on disappointing results. “Franck Riester? He’s the ghost of the Palais-Bourbon. He wanders the halls all alone, he doesn’t speak to anyone except his collaborators. He embodies the error in casting and interpretation of the President of the Republic on the legislative”, criticizes Benjamin Saint-Huile, deputy for the North (LIOT), to our colleagues in the World.

Not very talkative, Franck Riester is also very criticized for his speeches during the debates on the pension reform. “As soon as he speaks outside the hemicycle, it is to say that the reform is unfair. I salute this confusing sincerity. He is an excellent spokesperson for the opposition”, laughed the deputy socialist Arthur Delaporte. So much so that Franck Riester was renamed the “minister of missteps” by the JDD. It is therefore likely that Elisabeth Borne will not recall him in her next government.
